Ana María Martínez returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper as Madama Butterfly

On June 12, 14, and 19, Ana María Martínez returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper to sing her acclaimed Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly. Since her debut in the role in 2010, opposite Joseph Calleja at Houston Grand Opera, Ana María has become a noted interpreter of Puccini’s fragile geisha. Opera News has praised the Puerto Rican soprano’s “poignant vitality that brought forth both the teenage Butterfly’s youthful innocence and, later, her darkest despair.… The fragile quality to her singing in ‘Un bel dì’ underscored a deeply affecting, pitiful clinging to hope beyond all reason.”

In Munich, Martínez reunites with Calleja as Pinkerton, with Okka von der Damerau as Suzuki and Markus Eiche as Sharpless. Daniele Rustioni conducts Wolf Busse’s production.
